Congratulations on being named cheer captain of your squad! The job of captain is the highest of any cheerleading squad, and lots of cheerleaders would love to be named to that position.

But what exactly does a cheerleading captain do? Here are some of the jobs that you might be called to do as captain of your cheerleading squad.

Act as a go-between for the squad and the coach. As captain, you are second to your cheerleading coach and the other squad members will look to you to help them bring up any problems or concerns they have with your coach. In return, the coach will look to you to help her with any problems or concerns she may have with the squad. Keeping an open mind and being willing to listen to all sides in these situations will be the most important thing. You’ll need to be mature and level-headed to help keep things running smoothly for your squad!

Keep all squad members informed of events. It’s your job to make sure that all of your fellow cheerleaders know when and where to meet for practices, games, pep rallies, and other events. Make sure you have contact numbers for all members of your squad so you can easily send out texts or make calls.

Lead practices and call cheers during games. You need to know every cheer by heart—which includes the words and the routines. Most likely, you’ll be the one leading the other cheerleaders during events and you’ll also be in charge of starting practices and making sure the other cheerleaders know the cheers.

Help plan and organize events. Many cheerleading squads hold fundraising events throughout the year and the coach will look to you to help organize them. You’ll need to plan meetings to work on set up for the events, create advertising, assign duties to other cheerleaders, and finalize details for the big day.

The job of cheer captain is a big one, but it can also be really fun and is a great way to show your school, your squad, and your coach that you have the maturity, skills, and talent to take on a leadership role. So be proud that you were chosen to be cheerleading captain, whether it was assigned by your coach or by your squad. It means that the others look up to you and think you have what it takes to lead them through a great squad year!
